            Are Etsy Fees Killing Your Profit?

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">However, there are flat fees that Etsy charges that can seriously eat into your profits if you are pricing too low.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Let me demonstrate this with the table and chart below.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">For example, if you sell your product for $1, you will actually pay more in fees to Etsy than you will make in profit!</p>

<p><em>Etsy fees and your profit and profit margin at various price points. I’ve also included break-even ROAS (return on ad spend) as a handy reference when running Etsy ads.</em></p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Although I do recommend pricing on the low-mid side while establishing your shop, it makes a lot of financial sense to raise your prices (and value) over time, to benefit from larger profit margins.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">The extra breathing room you have with larger profit margins means you can afford Etsy ads, and for most successful shops I do recommend this. They have helped my shop scale to 30k+ sales in 3 years.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Profit margins for most of my digital products are around 80%. I also spend about 20% on Etsy ads, which leaves me with a comfortable 60% profit overall.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">I get these numbers from <a class="z tw" href="https://profittree.io/?via=sellernook" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ProfitTree</a>*. It has a dashboard that allows you to track your profits daily, instead of waiting for Etsy’s summary at the end of the month. I keep an eye on this and, if I need to, I make adjustments to my ads to keep the spend below my 20% target.</p>

Again, this is only for US digital product sellers. Physical product sellers have other costs that affect the break-even ROAS, and international sellers may have additional fees.</p>

            How Many Listings Do You Actually Need on Etsy?

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">But this question comes up so often in my Etsy Digital Seller Reddit community that I thought a blog post was in order.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">When people ask this question, most experienced sellers will say that you need a lot of listings to succeed selling digital products on Etsy. But why is that? And can we define “a lot”?</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Each listing gives you one chance</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Someone in my community described it like putting fishing hooks into a lake. Each hook gives you a chance to catch a fish. But if you could put in multiple hooks, at different locations and depths, with different bait, then you would have many more opportunities to catch different types of fish.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Now I have never been fishing, but I still really like this analogy.</p>

<h3 class="app aec wy bb aed apa aul apb mb apc aum apd mf ado aun agw agx ads auo agy agz adw aup aha ahb apv bg">Competition</h3>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Going back to our fishing analogy, now imagine that the lake is a popular fishing spot and that other people have put many, many other hooks in the water. I think you can see how in this situation you would be better off having more hooks in the water yourself. On the other hand, in an quiet lake where you are fishing alone, maybe one or two hooks is enough.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Ok, enough about fishing.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">What it comes down to is competition. If there is not a lot of competition in your niche, then your shop with only a few products will be fine. Your products will probably show on the first few pages of search results.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">If there is a lot of competition, your products could very well be buried in the search results. Each listing will be given a brief boost to test it, but if it doesn’t perform well, Etsy will not prioritise it after that.</p>
<h3 class="app aec wy bb aed apa apq apb mb apc apr apd mf ado aps agw agx ads apt agy agz adw apu aha ahb apv bg">Complexity</h3>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Complex products that take a long time to make typically have less competition on Etsy. Not as many people can or want to make that product, and those that do make it only have time to make a small number of them.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">So if your digital product is very complex and time consuming to make, you will not need as many of them in your shop.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">On the other hand, if your product is relatively quick and easy to make, then other people will also be willing and able to make many of them, so you will need more products to compete.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Practice makes perfect</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">An underrated reason why more listings usually works better than fewer listings is that you will improve with practice. Your products will get better as you improve your craft and as you learn what is resonating with your customers over time.</p>

<p class="auc aud wy bb aue auf aug auh aui auj auk aea dv">The more products you create, the better your products will become.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm auq adj adk xo aur adm adn ado aus adq adr ads aut adu adv adw auu ady adz aea iv bg">Thinking back to my earliest products, many of them weren’t that great, to be honest. I didn’t know that at the time, but with the benefit of hindsight I can now see that I have grown a lot and my products have improved to the point where I consistently get bestsellers, not just as a random fluke.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Ok, but what’s a ballpark number to aim for?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">You are very insistent aren’t you? Well, as you can understand from what I’ve written above, it depends.</p>
<blockquote class="aor aos aot">
<p class="adf adg aep adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Is your digital product quick and easy to make with many, many competitors?</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Then you might need 100–1000 products. Don’t freak out when you see 1000. You could build this up over years, not all at once! Remember what I said above about the importance of time and practice.</p>

<p class="adf adg aep adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Is your digital product difficult and time consuming to make with not many competitors?</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Then you might only need 10–50 products.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">These are very rough numbers, as you can tell by the large ranges.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">And I repeat from above, <strong class="adh lx">there is no magic number</strong>. Your products do actually have to be good, not just numerous.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">So is quantity more important than quality?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">You’re not going to like this answer, but <strong class="adh lx">they are both important</strong>.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">There is no point cranking out 1000 poor quality products that no one wants.</p>
<blockquote class="aub">
<p class="auc aud wy bb aue auf aug auh aui auj auk aea dv">Your products need to consistently be high quality, and carefully aimed at meeting customer needs (not just your own preferences).</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm auq adj adk xo aur adm adn ado aus adq adr ads aut adu adv adw auu ady adz aea iv bg">However, the fact that you generally do need to make a lot of listings means that you should have some perspective about the time you’re taking with each.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Are you making a simple product but spending hours tweaking a tiny thing that probably no one will ever notice? Be aware of your perfectionism and try to let rationality prevail.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Look, I am guilty of this. Sometimes I just want to fix some tiny thing even when it takes me longer than it should. But I know it is a waste of time and that I am going too far down a perfectionism spiral.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">So it might happen to you too. Just try to reign it in and find a good balance between quality and quantity.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">If you’re still unsure, check your competitors</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">I sound like a broken record, but it’s a good idea to check competitor shops with the same product type and niche. How many listings do they have?</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Just two things to keep in mind:</p>
<ol class="">
<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">If they are old shops, they have had a lot more time to create listings, so don’t stress about hitting the same number, but use it as a general guide to eventually aim for.</li>
<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm aol adj adk xo aom adm adn ado aon adq adr ads aoo adu adv adw aop ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">If they are old shops, they could have less listings than you need as they might have entered the market when there was less competition, and might be surviving based on their repeat customers and good reputation.</li>
</ol>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">So if you can find newer successful shops in your niche, that is a better comparison.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Final thoughts</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">While there is no magic number of listings, for digital products it is usually best to have a lot of listings. There are exceptions to this in the cases of very complex products which are difficult to make, and/or products with very low competition. If you press me to give you absolute numbers, which I don’t like to do, perhaps 100–1000 for quick, simple products in competitive niches, or 10–50 products for complex, time-consuming products in less competitive niches.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">At the end of the day you can only make so many products with the amount of time and energy you have, so make sure you work at a sustainable pace and don’t burn yourself out. In spite of all this talk about quantity, consistency and quality are still essential.</p>

            Etsy Is Hiding Your Digital Products From Search Results

It has been happening for at least several weeks.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">What is happening?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">When a customer does a search on Etsy, for example ‘wedding invitation’, Etsy is pre-selecting a filter for <strong class="adh lx">Physical items</strong>.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">If you are a seller of digital wedding invitations, this is obviously a concern.</p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">I did a lot of experimenting with search terms and found that if a customer does a second search, adding clarifying words like:</p>

<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Why are they doing this?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Etsy haven’t announced this change, so we can only speculate. I imagine that for some products, physical and handmade products are being overwhelmed by a larger volume of digital items.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">I don’t disagree with the logic, but the implementation is a problem as obvious searches for digital items are still having the Physical items filter pre-applied.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">The good news</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">There are two pieces of good news though.</p>
<ol class="">
<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">If the customer adds one of those <strong class="adh lx">qualifiers</strong> from the list above (such as ‘digital download’) on their <strong class="adh lx">initial search</strong>, then Etsy does not apply the Physical items filter.</li>
<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm aol adj adk xo aom adm adn ado aon adq adr ads aoo adu adv adw aop ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">For some types of products, such as <strong class="adh lx">wall art</strong>, Etsy does not apply the Physical items filter (at least not during my testing). So this issue might not apply to your digital product.</li>
</ol>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">What you can do?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">If your products are affected by this, make sure you include words that indicate to Etsy and customers that your product is digital. This could help boost your visibility when the filter is not applied and provide clarity to customers.</p>
<blockquote class="aor aos aot">
<p class="adf adg aep adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">I would sprinkle these words through your <strong class="adh lx">title</strong>, and make sure at least one is included near the beginning, in your first phrase.</p>

We still don’t know if this is a test, and as Etsy has never announced this, it could be a feature they are still working on improving.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">You could also contact Etsy to raise this issue so that they can pass your feedback on to the relevant team.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">What not to do</h2>

<p class="adf adg aep adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">More importantly, <strong class="adh lx">don’t</strong> start listing your digital items as physical items to try to work around this and get more visibility.</p>

Not only is it deceptive, but it is also likely to confuse customers and lead to mistaken purchases, a poor customer experience and bad reviews.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Final thoughts</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">It is concerning for digital sellers that Etsy is pre-filtering some searches to Physical items only. This feature, presumably aimed at helping customers find what they are looking for more easily, is implemented in an inconsistent and illogical way. My advice for affected sellers is to not panic, but to ensure that your titles contain keywords to indicate that your products are digital, to attract customers who are looking for this. You can also voice your concerns with Etsy.</p>

            5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Etsy Digital Shop

<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">1. Launch early</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">I prepared way too many products before I launched my shop. It makes sense not to launch with only one or two products, but if you have 30–50 sitting there ready on your hard drive, trust me, that is too many!</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">If I were to start again, I would aim for 10 or so products. As soon as your shop goes live, you can start collecting real-time data about customer preferences and competition levels. How many sales, favourites or views is each of your listings getting? See what’s gaining early traction and lean into it.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Looking back on it, my early products were not that great and most were not purchased. Over time I refined my skills and learned customer preferences and made more sales. But my shop needed to be open for this to happen. Stop stockpiling your listings and open your shop!</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">2. Progress over perfection</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">If you are a perfectionist like me, it will be hard to stop working on your products and admit they are done. Set yourself a limit and then publish. It will never be perfect, and people may or may not like it either way.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Each time you create a digital product you will get better at it. Resist the urge to go back and redo every product that you made earlier, as you will always be improving so there is no end to this.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">This isn’t to say you can’t go back a revise a product, but be mindful about it and don’t spend more time on revisions than on creating new products. As a new digital products shop, you need to keep feeding the algorithm new listings to maintain visibility.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">3. Learn by doing</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">I spent a lot of time learning from others on YouTube. I devoured all the information I could find. I do think it helped, but at a certain point it just becomes procrastination.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">When you go live with your shop, you will learn what is working for <em class="aep">you</em> and this contextual information is not something a YouTube guru can teach you. You need to figure it out for yourself.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">So by all means educate yourself, but accept that you will never know everything and that you don’t need to in order to open your shop. You will learn a lot along the way, and this is the way we all improve.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">4. Take risks</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">You might have heard the expression “no risk, no reward”. There are times you will need to do things that feel uncomfortable or risky. But acknowledge that this feeling can be brought on by unfamiliarity and lack of confidence in a new area. It doesn’t mean you should play it safe.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">For example, it feels risky to spend money on ads, but used wisely, ads can greatly help your new shop.</p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">You probably went into your business with an idea or strategy. Be open to experimenting and trying new things. Listen carefully to customer feedback. It might be that there is a better way, a better product for you to sell.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">This certainly happened to me. Within a couple of months it became clear that a particular type of product was doing much better than my main product. I shifted my focus more onto this product and 2 years later it is still serving me well.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">This isn’t to say you should chop and change constantly. Try something long enough to see if it’s working, and analyse all the data that is coming in. Then you can make an informed decision.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Have a flexible mindset so that when when the time comes you can make a change without wasting too much time debating it. The good news is that there is so much valuable information out there for free. I was very grateful for this as it really helped me when I was starting out. I pretty much watched YouTube videos obsessively for a while there!</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">However…</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">I’m writing this article for 2 reasons:</p>

<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">Not everyone is trustworthy and I want to help you to not get scammed by being aware of warning signs.</li>
<li class="adf adg wy adh b xm aol adj adk xo aom adm adn ado aon adq adr ads aoo adu adv adw aop ady adz aea aoq aoj aok bg">Conversely, others are genuinely helpful and experienced but unfairly get lumped into this “fake guru” category. I would love for people to be more discerning and to understand that there is a difference.</li>
</ol>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">So let’s get into the warning signs that an Etsy guru might be a bit suss.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Do they actually have a successful history on Etsy?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Ideally they would share screenshots of their revenue and sales. To decide how successful you consider them to be, you would need to bear in mind the time period and the profit margin. For example, print-on-demand sellers might only keep 20–40% in profit, while digital sellers might keep closer to 80%.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm adi adj adk xo adl adm adn ado adp adq adr ads adt adu adv adw adx ady adz aea iv bg">Should they share their shop name? It’s not unusual that they won’t share it as there are so many copycats on Etsy. It can be a big risk to their shop. This is the reason I don’t share mine either.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Are they selling an overpriced course?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Courses can be helpful for people who to prefer to learn in this structured way. But does the course cost thousands of dollars? Are they using high pressure sales tactics to get you to sign up immediately? Are they not offering refunds? These are all serious red flags.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Does everything they write or say sound like AI?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">I would strongly question their actual knowledge and experience if their words appear to be coming from a chat bot. I don’t know if that’s my personal bias against AI writing, but I feel like if you understand the topic well, writing about it should come easily.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Do they seem to help people genuinely?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">This might be in a community or a comments section. Are they engaging with people genuinely without every piece of advice being a sales pitch?</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Do they make claims that seem too good to be true?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Are they claiming you’ll make a large amount of money in a short time (aka get rich quick)? In fact, anyone who puts a dollar value on what you will make by following their advice is highly suspicious. No one can promise you outcomes like that. Even more shady if they position it as, “the course costs $2000, but you’ll make $5000 in your first month so you’ll get it all back and more!” Stay far away from this one.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly aee lz mb mc aef md mf hq aeg hr hy mi aeh mj mm mn aei mo mr aej bg">Do they have a reputation?</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Look them up. I’d recommend searching on Reddit as people are brutally honest on there. Is there a disproportionate number of people warning against someone? Probably best to listen to that advice.</p>
<h2 class="aeb aec wy bb aed ly ayh lz mb mc ayi md mf hq ayj hr hy mi ayk mj mm mn ayl mo mr aej bg">Final thoughts</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph adf adg wy adh b xm aek adj adk xo ael adm adn ado aem adq adr ads aen adu adv adw aeo ady adz aea iv bg">Some Etsy gurus are more trustworthy than others. Take what they say with a grain of salt and look out for warning signs. If everything seems good, happy learning!</p>

            How To Get More Views on Your Etsy Digital Products

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Obviously what people really want is more sales, but more views is the first step. It’s natural to feel discouraged when the products you’ve poured so much time and effort into are barely being seen by anyone.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Let’s fix that. Read on for a practical guide to getting more views, based on my own experience as a top 1% Etsy seller.</p>
<h2 class="og oh gn bb oi oj ok hn ol om on hq oo op oq or os ot ou ov ow ox oy oz pa pb bg">Be patient</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but if you are a new shop, this is my first piece of advice. If your shop is only days or weeks old, please be patient and give the algorithm time to figure out your products and show them to the right people. This doesn’t happen instantly.</p>

<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Don’t jump to the conclusion that nobody wants your products just because you don’t immediately get views and sales. Be patient and keep working on new products in the meantime.</p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Which brings me to…</p>
<h2 class="og oh gn bb oi oj ok hn ol om on hq oo op oq or os ot ou ov ow ox oy oz pa pb bg">Post more listings</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">I am particularly talking to digital shop owners here, but it is partly a numbers game. Many digital niches are very competitive, and new listings get a boost in the search algorithm, so keep creating new listings!</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">This could be a variation of an existing listing, or a bundle of listings, or a completely new product. The important thing is that you are adding more listings at least weekly if you can. Or if your products take longer to create, just as often as you can reasonably manage, while keeping the quality high.</p>
<blockquote class="pp pq pr">
<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">The more listings you have, the more opportunities you have to create a product that resonates with your potential customers.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Think of each new listing as a tiny ad that you only paid $0.20 for.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Quality is important, but don’t get hung up on making it perfect. Done is better than perfect.</p>

<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Creating more listings also gives you more practice at creating your products, so that they will become better and better.</p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Trust me, my products improved a lot over time, and that happens for pretty much everyone. You’ll look back at your old products one day and see how far you’ve come.</p>
<h2 class="og oh gn bb oi oj ok hn ol om on hq oo op oq or os ot ou ov ow ox oy oz pa pb bg">Work on your value proposition</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">What does this mean exactly? Your value proposition is why customers should choose your product, what makes it unique and why it is better than competitors’ products.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Your value proposition includes aspects like:</p>
<ul class="">
<li class="nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe ph pi pj bg">your price</li>
<li class="nj nk gn nl b hl pk nn no ho pl nq nr ns pm nu nv nw pn ny nz oa po oc od oe ph pi pj bg">your main thumbnail image</li>
<li class="nj nk gn nl b hl pk nn no ho pl nq nr ns pm nu nv nw pn ny nz oa po oc od oe ph pi pj bg">your keywords (title and tags)</li>
</ul>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Let’s go through each of these.</p>
<h3 class="afd oh gn bb oi afe aff afg ol afh afi afj oo ns afk sm sn nw afl so sp oa afm sq sr afn bg">How to price your products</h3>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">This could be an article on its own, but in the context of this article, how should you price to get more views on your products?</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Generally speaking, a lower price will entice a larger number of clicks.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">The caveat is that you might attract a lot of bargain hunters if you price too low, and these can be very difficult customers to please.</p>
<blockquote class="pp pq pr">
<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">My advice for a new digital products shop would be to price towards the lower to middle of the market, to more quickly attract initial views and sales.</p>

<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Don’t try to be the cheapest though, and don’t get pressured into offering a bundle of 100s or 1000s of files for a few dollars (as you’ll see some competitors doing!).</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Price attractively at the beginning to attract customers, sales and reviews, and then look to slowly raise your prices to the middle to top of the market as you establish more credibility and as your products improve.</p>
<h3 class="afd oh gn bb oi afe aff afg ol afh afi afj oo ns afk sm sn nw afl so sp oa afm sq sr afn bg">What makes a good thumbnail image</h3>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">I hear a lot of people saying they want their thumbnails to stand out from others and stop the scroll.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">I get this argument, but as a shop with few sales or reviews, I think it is important to establish trust.</p>
<blockquote class="pp pq pr">
<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">One easy way to establish trust is to have your thumbnail look similar to the top shops.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Critically examine these to find common patterns. Decide what aspects you want to include in your own, and what you want to avoid.</p>

<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Whatever stye you choose, ensure that your product is clearly visible in your thumbnail, and that other elements do not steal focus. It should be clear at a glance what your product is, ideally without too much text explaining it.</p>
</blockquote>
<h3 class="afd oh gn bb oi afe aff afg ol afh afi afj oo ns afk sm sn nw afl so sp oa afm sq sr afn bg">The importance of keywords</h3>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">As Etsy comes to understand your shop and products better over time, keywords will become less important. Don’t forget that Etsy also analyses your images and that they have recently advised people to use shorter titles as they gather information about your listings from various places.</p>

<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">However, as a new shop, keywords are important for helping the Etsy algorithm understand who to show your products to.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Think carefully about who your products are designed for, and when and why they would use them. Use these words in your titles, tags and/or descriptions.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Spend time doing keyword research, on Etsy or using 3rd party tools, to help you with this, and also look at competitors’ listings for inspiration.</p>
<h2 class="og oh gn bb oi oj ok hn ol om on hq oo op oq or os ot ou ov ow ox oy oz pa pb bg">Don’t run ads</h2>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl pc nn no ho pd nq nr ns pe nu nv nw pf ny nz oa pg oc od oe gg bg">Don’t run ads?</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">But you’re probably thinking, surely ads = greater visibility?</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">Yes, there’s even an ad strategy on Etsy called ‘greater visibility’. But wait, not so fast!</p>
<blockquote class="pp pq pr">
<p class="nj nk of nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">In the scenario that your shop is only days or weeks old, and you have none or very few sales, ads aren’t a magic bullet.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">While they could bring more views to your product, there is a good chance that people still won’t buy your products. Either because you haven’t yet nailed the value proposition or product quality, or because the customer doesn’t trust a shop with no sales or reviews.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">You might gather some interesting data about which products were viewed the most, but more likely you will just lose money. After losing money you will feel even more deflated and like you should give up.</p>
<p class="pw-post-body-paragraph nj nk gn nl b hl nm nn no ho np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe gg bg">So that is why I would advise not to run ads so early (but they can be a useful tool for growing your shop — see my <a class="z adg" href="https://sellernook-shop.fourthwall.com/supporters/posts/245080/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guide for running Etsy ads</a>).</p>

While you’re waiting for the Etsy algorithm to better understand your shop and products, work on creating more products and listings, and ensure you have optimised thumbnails, titles and tags. Have attractive pricing which represents good value for your customers. You will soon see your consistent efforts being rewarded with more views, the first step towards a successful shop.</p>

<p class="graf graf--p">If you’re new to selling on Etsy you might be creating products based on what you personally like. This is not necessarily wrong, but you need to keep customer needs front and centre at all times.</p>
<p class="graf graf--p">Part of this is recognising that there are evergreen products which can sell all year, and seasonal products which only sell at certain times.</p>
<p class="graf graf--p">Seasonal sales are <em class="markup--em markup--p-em">massive</em> on Etsy, so for many of us it is essential to be prepared for holidays and occasions well in advance.</p>
<p class="graf graf--p">I thought I’d put together a handy reference of important dates in my experience as a digital seller. These are fairly US-centric as this is where most of my customers are based.</p>
<p class="graf graf--p">In terms of prep, I’m usually doing that 2 months ahead, as some of these peak up to a month in advance of the date.</p>
